Make-up settles into lines that weren't there before. The marks from old spots are still there. Your skin looks tired even on the days you aren't.

You've bought the serums. Some helped a bit. Most of them sat on the surface.

Microneedling works further down, where your skin makes its own collagen. Research shows a course can soften scarring and fine lines, and many people notice smoother, brighter skin as it goes.

Is this you?

Nod at a few of these and microneedling is worth a conversation.

Rough texture

Skin that feels uneven under your fingers, and shows it under make-up.

Fine lines

Around the eyes, the mouth and the forehead.

Open pores

Pores that look bigger than they used to, often on the nose and cheeks.

Acne scarring

The dents and marks left behind after the spots have gone.

Dull skin

Flat, tired-looking skin that doesn't reflect the light.

Thinning hair

A wider parting, more scalp showing, or a ponytail that feels thinner.

Spots still coming, or redness and flushing that won't settle? Those come first, and they have their own pages: acne treatment and rosacea treatment.

How microneedling works

Tiny, controlled injuries that your skin repairs, and a booster that gets further in because of them.

1

Check

Your skin, your history and your medicines, and whether microneedling suits you right now.

2

Treat

A pen with very fine needles makes thousands of tiny channels in the top layers of your skin. Most people feel a scratchy, prickly sensation.

3

Booster

A booster chosen for your skin goes on during the treatment and straight after. The open channels let it reach deeper than it would from the surface.

4

Repair

Your skin treats the channels as small wounds and repairs them, making new collagen and elastin over the weeks that follow.

What it can help

Texture, fine lines, enlarged pores, acne scarring and dull skin. Research shows improvement in scars and fine lines over a course. Results vary, and no outcome is guaranteed.

Your course

Typically 3 to 6 sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart. Scarring usually needs more sessions than dullness. Collagen keeps building for months after your last one.

Downtime

Your skin is pink or red, like mild sunburn, for 1 to 3 days. It may feel tight and dry for a few days after that. Most people go back to work the next day.

Aftercare

No make-up for the rest of the day. SPF 30 or higher every day. No exercise, heat or swimming for 24 hours, keep out of direct sun for 2 weeks, and no retinol, acids or scrubs for 5 days. You'll get exact instructions for your skin before you leave.

When we wait, or choose something else

Tell us at booking if any of these apply. Some mean we wait; others mean we adjust the plan.

  • An active acne breakout or any infection on the area being treated
  • A cold sore, or one starting
  • Taking retinoid acne tablets now, or a recent course: the timing is decided with you
  • A tendency to raised or keloid scars
  • Blood-thinning medicines
  • Fillers or injections in the same area in the last 2 weeks
  • Pregnancy: we wait until after your baby is born. Breastfeeding: tell us, and we decide the timing and the booster with you

Microneedling for the scalp

The same treatment on the scalp, with a booster for the hair follicles. In trials in pattern hair loss, people who had scalp microneedling alongside hair loss treatment saw more improvement in hair density and thickness than with the treatment on its own.

Hair loss has causes

Low iron, thyroid problems and hormone changes are common ones. Microneedling supports the scalp, but it can't fix a low iron level. So we look for the cause first.

Treated alongside

If something shows up in your bloods, it's treated at the same time. Any medicine for hair loss is decided together after your consultation. More on skin and hair

Blood tests that help

If you already have recent results, bring them. If you don't, these are the ones that help with hair loss.

Iron

Iron and your iron stores. Low iron is a common, treatable cause of hair shedding in women. About this test

Thyroid

Full thyroid function. An underactive or overactive thyroid can both thin your hair. About this test

Female hormones

Your cycle hormones, testosterone, prolactin and full thyroid, for women. About this test

Everything in one

Hormones, thyroid, iron, vitamins, blood sugar and more in one sample. About this test

Questions people ask me

About the treatment
Does microneedling hurt?

Most people describe a scratchy, prickling feeling, strongest over bony areas. It's usually very manageable, and we check in with you all the way through.

How many sessions will I need?

Typically 3 to 6, about 4 to 6 weeks apart. Scarring usually needs more sessions than dullness or texture, and we plan the number with you after your skin check.

When will I see a difference?

Many people notice brighter, smoother skin within a couple of weeks. Collagen builds slowly, so changes to lines and scars show over months, and results vary from person to person.

What is a skin booster?

A serum applied during and straight after microneedling, chosen for what your skin needs, such as hydration or repair. The tiny channels let it reach deeper than it would from the surface.

Is microneedling suitable for darker skin?

Often, yes. It doesn't remove the surface layer of skin, so the risk of pigment change is lower than with some lasers and deep peels. It can still happen, so the depth is adjusted and sun protection matters more. Your skin is checked first either way.

Before and after
Do I need a consultation first?

Not always. Your skin is checked at the start of every treatment, but if you're unsure whether microneedling is right for you, the Skin & Skincare Consultation is the place to start.

How much downtime is there?

Expect pink or red skin, like mild sunburn, for 1 to 3 days, then a few days of tightness or dryness. Most people go back to work the next day.

What do I do afterwards?

No make-up for the rest of the day, SPF 30 or higher every day, no exercise, heat or swimming for 24 hours, and no retinol, acids or scrubs for 5 days. You'll get exact instructions for your skin before you leave.

Who shouldn't have microneedling?

Not on the day if you have an active breakout or infection on the area, or a cold sore. Tell us about retinoid acne tablets, blood thinners, raised or keloid scars, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and we decide the timing or the booster with you.

I have acne or rosacea. Can I still have it?

Active acne and flaring rosacea are treated first. See acne treatment and rosacea treatment, and microneedling for scarring can follow once your skin has settled.

Scalp and hair
Will scalp microneedling regrow my hair?

Nobody can promise that. In trials in pattern hair loss, adding microneedling to hair loss treatment improved hair density and thickness more than the treatment alone, and how much it helps you depends on the cause.

Why test my bloods for hair loss?

Because low iron, thyroid problems and hormone changes are common causes, and microneedling can't correct any of them. Finding the cause means it gets treated alongside your scalp.

Can I have it alongside other hair loss treatment?

Yes, and the research suggests it works better that way. Any medicine for hair loss is decided together after your consultation.

Urgent symptoms
What needs checking urgently after treatment?

Spreading redness, heat, swelling, pus or a fever: contact the clinic the same day, and if you feel very unwell, call 111. Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or trouble breathing: call 999.

What if a mole or spot worries me?

A mole that is changing in size, shape or colour, or bleeding, or a spot that won't heal, needs an urgent referral through your GP, within 2 weeks: ask for it by name. If you're under the clinic's care, the clinic writes to your GP the same day.
