Review

A review at 2 weeks, once the swelling has gone down, to check the result and decide whether anything needs adding.

What's in the syringe, and how it works

All the fillers used for these treatments are hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid

A sugar your skin already makes. It holds water, which is part of what keeps skin plump and smooth. Your body makes less of it as you age.

Why it lasts

Your own hyaluronic acid breaks down quickly. In a filler, its strands are linked together, called cross-linking, into a gel. That makes it much harder for your body to break down, so it stays for months instead of days.

Soft gel or firm gel

How tightly the strands are linked changes how firm the gel is. Lips move all the time, so they need a softer, more flexible gel. Cheeks and chin need a firmer gel that holds its shape and gives lift. Choosing the right gel for the area is part of the plan.

How long it lasts

Usually 6 to 18 months, depending on the filler and the area. Lips move most, so they tend to fade sooner. Cheeks often last longer. It fades gradually, without a sudden drop.

It can be dissolved

Hyaluronic acid filler can be broken down with a dissolving enzyme, which is kept in the clinic. If a result isn't right, it can usually be dissolved. If a blood vessel is blocked, dissolving the filler quickly is the first emergency treatment.

Comfort

Many hyaluronic acid fillers have a local anaesthetic mixed into the gel, which helps numb the area as the treatment goes on. Numbing cream can be used first as well.

Areas we treat

Lips

Shape, definition, hydration or a little more fullness, with a soft gel. A first treatment is often 0.5ml, so you can see how you feel before adding more. Lips swell most in the first few days, so judge the result at your review.

Cheeks

As we age, the fat and bone in the cheeks lose volume, and the face can look flatter and more tired. A firmer gel placed along the cheekbone can restore some of that support and lift. Because the cheek holds up the area below it, a little lift here can also soften the lines from nose to mouth. Cheeks usually need more filler than lips, often 1ml or 2ml, and the result tends to last longer.

Other areas: ask at your consultation

Chin, jawline and the lines from nose to mouth can also be treated. The tear trough, the hollow under the eye, is a higher-skill area. It is assessed case by case, and not everyone suits it.

Nose

Filler can make a bump less noticeable or lift the tip of the nose without surgery. It carries more risk than other areas. Non-surgical nose job

For lines from frowning, squinting or raising your eyebrows, filler is usually the wrong tool. Those lines come from muscle movement. Anti-wrinkle injections · All aesthetics

On the day and after

On the day

We go through your plan and consent, take photos for your record, clean the skin and numb it if needed. You see the shape in a mirror before you leave.

Swelling and bruising

Both are common. Swelling is usually most noticeable in the first few days, especially in the lips. A bruise can take longer to fade, so book at least 2 weeks before an event.

Aftercare

At first, avoid makeup over the injection points, hard exercise, saunas, alcohol and pressing or massaging the area unless you've been asked to. You leave with written aftercare that gives the exact timings.

Your review at 2 weeks

Once the swelling has settled, the result is checked, and any small top-up is agreed then.

Risks

Common

Bruising, swelling, tenderness and redness where the needle went in. Small lumps can happen; most settle, and the ones that don't can usually be treated, often by dissolving the filler.

Rare but serious

Filler can block or press on a blood vessel. This is called a vascular occlusion. It can starve the skin of blood, which can damage it and leave a scar, and, very rarely, cause permanent loss of sight. That is why the dissolving enzyme is kept in the clinic and a written emergency protocol is followed.

Infection or allergy

Uncommon. Spreading redness, heat, swelling that keeps growing, or a fever needs checking. Tell the clinic straight away.

Who it isn't for

Anyone under 18: it is against the law to give filler for cosmetic reasons under that age. Not during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or where the skin in the area is infected, including a cold sore. Some medical conditions and medicines need checking first, and we go through those at your consultation.

After treatment, act straight away if you notice: pain that gets worse instead of better, or skin that turns white, grey, blue or mottled. Contact the clinic immediately. If you can't reach the clinic straight away, go to A&E. Any change in your vision: call 999 straight away, then tell the clinic. Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing: call 999.

Questions people ask me

About filler
What is dermal filler made of?

The fillers on this page are hyaluronic acid, a sugar your skin already makes. Its strands are linked into a gel so it lasts for months.

How long does filler last?

Usually 6 to 18 months, depending on the filler and the area. Lips tend to fade sooner, and cheeks often last longer.

Can filler be dissolved?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be broken down with a dissolving enzyme, which is kept in the clinic.

Does it hurt?

Most people feel pressure and some stinging. Many fillers contain a local anaesthetic, and numbing cream can be used first.

Will I look overdone?

Starting small makes it much less likely. The aim is your own face, rested, and anything extra can be added at your review.

Areas
Can you do cheek filler?

Yes. A firmer gel along the cheekbone can restore some support and lift, and it can soften the lines from nose to mouth as well.

How much filler do I need?

Lips often start with 0.5ml. Cheeks usually need 1ml or 2ml. We decide the amount together at your consultation.

Can you treat tear troughs?

Sometimes. The area under the eye is a higher-skill area, so it is assessed case by case, and not everyone suits it.

Can filler change my nose?

Yes, without surgery, in some cases. It carries more risk than other areas: non-surgical nose job.

After treatment
How much swelling will I have?

Some swelling is normal, most in the first few days and most in the lips. Bruising can take longer to fade.

When is the review?

At 2 weeks, once the swelling has settled. Contact the clinic sooner if something doesn't feel right.

What should I avoid afterwards?

At first, avoid makeup over the injection points, hard exercise, saunas, alcohol and pressing on the area. Your written aftercare gives the exact timings.

What symptoms need urgent help?

Pain that gets worse, or skin that turns white, grey, blue or mottled: contact the clinic immediately, or go to A&E if you can't reach it straight away. Any change in your vision: call 999 straight away, then tell the clinic. Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing: call 999.

Booking
Do I need a consultation first?

If it's your first time, or you're not sure what you need, yes. If you know which area and amount you want, you can book the treatment directly, and we still go through your history and consent before anything starts.

Is there an age limit?

Yes. Filler for cosmetic reasons is only for people aged 18 and over. That is the law in England.

Can I have filler if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. We wait until your baby is born and you've finished breastfeeding.

Where is the clinic?

In Milton Keynes. The address is in your booking confirmation.
