Your skincare is good. Your skin still looks tired.

It feels tight by the afternoon, foundation sits on it instead of in it, and the glow you used to have without trying has gone quiet. Under your eyes looks crepey even after a full night's sleep.

Skin boosters are placed just under the surface, where creams can't reach.

Is this you?

Nod at a few of these and a skin booster may suit you.

Dull skin

The glow has gone, whatever you put on it.

Dry or tight

Skin that feels thirsty however much you moisturise.

Fine lines

Fine surface lines and a crepey texture starting to show.

Under the eyes

Thin, crepey skin and dark circles that make you look tired.

Neck and chest

Skin there changing faster than your face.

No change of shape

You want better skin, without volume or a different face.

How a course works

A skin booster is given as a course, and the results build with each session.

1

Talk

Your skin, your health, any allergies, fish included, and what you want to change. An Aesthetics Consultation if you're not sure which booster.

2

Treat

Tiny injections just under the surface of the skin, in clinic.

3

Course

2 or 3 sessions, 3 to 4 weeks apart, depending on the booster.

4

Maintain

A Skin Booster Review at the end of the course, then a maintenance session every 6 to 12 months.

Skin boosters are designed to improve the quality of your skin: hydration, texture and glow. They don't add volume or change the shape of your face. For expression lines, see anti-wrinkle injections.

How each one works

2 families of booster. Hyaluronic acid holds water in the skin. Polynucleotides, made from purified fish DNA, are thought to work as a repair signal.

Seventy Hyal 2000

What's in it: high molecular weight hyaluronic acid at 1.5%. How it works: hyaluronic acid is a sugar your skin already makes to hold water. Placed just under the surface, it draws in hydration and is thought to support your skin's own repair. Best for: dry, dull, dehydrated skin on the face, neck or chest. Course: 2 to 3 sessions, 4 weeks apart, then a top-up every 6 to 12 months. Book Seventy Hyal 2000

Vitaran

What's in it: polynucleotides, purified fragments of salmon or trout DNA, at 20mg per ml. How it works: polynucleotides are thought to act as a repair signal in the skin, calming inflammation and encouraging the cells that make collagen. They don't add volume. Best for: skin that looks tired, stressed or slow to recover. 1ml treats the face; 2ml treats the face, neck and chest. Course: 3 sessions, 3 weeks apart, then 1 session every 6 months. Book Vitaran

Lumi Eyes

What's in it: polynucleotides from purified fish DNA, made for the thin skin around the eyes. How it works: the same repair signal as Vitaran, placed with a fine needle across the under-eye area. Best for: crepey under-eye skin, fine lines and dark circles where thin skin is part of the cause. Course: 3 sessions, 4 weeks apart, then every 6 months. Book Lumi Eyes

Skin Booster: face, eye area and neck

What's in it: a hyaluronic acid booster (no fish DNA), spread across the face, the eye area and the neck in one session. How it works: non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid isn't built to hold a shape like filler; it hydrates the skin and is thought to encourage its own repair. Best for: treating several areas at once. Which product, and how much goes where, is decided with you on the day. Book the Skin Booster

On the day, and after

What you feel

Lots of tiny pricks, close together. Most people find it very manageable, and you go back to your day afterwards.

Downtime

Small bumps at the injection points usually settle within 24 hours, and any redness or swelling within 1 to 3 days. Around the eyes, some puffiness for 24 to 48 hours is normal. Bruising is possible.

Aftercare

Leave the bumps alone. No make-up on the area until the next day, and no hard exercise, saunas or alcohol for 24 to 48 hours. No other facial treatments in the area for 2 weeks, and SPF every day.

Results

Hydration often shows within the first 2 weeks. Repair-type results build across the course and keep improving for some weeks after the last session.

Who it isn't for

Skin boosters are for adults, 18 and over.

They aren't suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an infection or active breakout where the injections would go, or with an allergy to any ingredient. Autoimmune conditions, blood thinners and a tendency to keloid scars are talked through first.

Allergic to fish or seafood? Vitaran and Lumi Eyes are made from fish DNA, so they're not for you. A hyaluronic acid booster such as Seventy Hyal 2000 may still suit you, and we check at your appointment.

Debora Tentis, Women's Health Pharmacist Prescriber. Seeing clients in clinic in Milton Keynes.

I spent over a decade in community pharmacy listening to people describe their skin, their sleep, their mood and their bodies, and watching each of those get sent somewhere different. Questions people ask me

Choosing a booster
What is a skin booster?

An injectable designed to improve the quality of your skin: hydration, texture and glow. It doesn't add volume or change the shape of your face.

Skin booster or filler?

A booster works on the skin itself; filler replaces volume and shape. If you want lips, cheeks or contour, look at dermal fillers.

Which one is right for me?

Seventy Hyal 2000 suits dry, dull, dehydrated skin, Vitaran suits tired skin that needs repair, and Lumi Eyes is for the under-eye area. If you're unsure, book an Aesthetics Consultation first.

What's the difference between hyaluronic acid and polynucleotides?

Hyaluronic acid holds water in the skin. Polynucleotides are purified fragments of fish DNA, thought to work as a repair signal that encourages the cells that make collagen.

Is there an age limit?

Yes, 18 and over only.

The treatment
Does it hurt?

You feel lots of tiny pricks, close together. Most people find it very manageable; ask about numbing cream when you book.

How many sessions do I need?

Seventy Hyal 2000: 2 to 3 sessions, 4 weeks apart. Vitaran: 3 sessions, 3 weeks apart. Lumi Eyes: 3 sessions, 4 weeks apart.

When will I see a difference?

Hydration often shows within the first 2 weeks. Repair-type results build across the course and keep improving for some weeks after the last session.

How long do results last?

It depends on your skin and the booster. Most people book a maintenance session every 6 to 12 months; for Vitaran and Lumi Eyes it's usually every 6 months.

Is there downtime?

Small bumps at the injection points usually settle within 24 hours, and redness or swelling within 1 to 3 days. Around the eyes, some puffiness for 24 to 48 hours is normal.

Safety and aftercare
I'm allergic to fish. Can I have a skin booster?

Not a polynucleotide: Vitaran and Lumi Eyes are made from fish DNA. A hyaluronic acid booster such as Seventy Hyal 2000 may still suit you, and we check at your appointment.

Who shouldn't have a skin booster?

Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, with an infection or active breakout at the site, or with an allergy to any ingredient. Autoimmune conditions, blood thinners and a tendency to keloid scars are talked through first.

What aftercare do I need?

No make-up on the area until the next day, and no hard exercise, saunas or alcohol for 24 to 48 hours. No other facial treatments in the area for 2 weeks, and SPF every day.

Can I have skin boosters with anti-wrinkle injections?

Yes, on separate days about 2 weeks apart. Read about anti-wrinkle injections first.

Can I combine it with microneedling or a facial?

Yes, as separate appointments. Leave 2 weeks after a booster before microneedling or a peel in the same area.

What needs urgent help?

Skin that turns white, grey or dusky with increasing pain needs help straight away: call the clinic now, and if you can't get through at once, call 111 or go to A&E. Redness, heat or swelling that gets worse after 2 days, or a fever: contact the clinic the same day, or call 111 out of hours. Any change in your vision, or swelling of the face, lips or tongue or difficulty breathing: call 999.
